John Dickens
(June 29, 1926 - December 30, 2010)

John Dickens, 84, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. John was born in North Carolina on June 29, 1926 being 1 of 13 children to John W. and Ella M. (Wilder) Dickens.

John was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a self-employed welder and was a member of the Mormon Church. John enjoyed genealogy.

John is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, A. Marie Dickens, and his 2nd wife, Kay (Brown) Dickens.

He is survived by his three sons; Rick Dickens (Becky) of Vinten, LA, Michael Dickens (Sharon) of Newburgh, Gary Dickens (MaryAnn) of Mt. Vernon; stepson, Adam Kahn of Newburgh; grandchildren; Jennifer, Jason, Lindsey, Joshua, and Spencer Dickens, as well as several great grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be on Monday, January 3, 2011 with burial to follow at Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, January 2, 2011at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main Street in Mt. Vernon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Posey County Humane Society.

This indenture made this day of Dec in the year of our Lord 1807 between Neil Colbreth on the one part and Phebe Wallis on the other part Witnesseth that for the value and consideration of one hundred and twenty five dollars to me in hand paid before the consenting and signing hereof by said Neill I do hereby assign all my rights and title of a certain tract or parcel of land lying on the upper side of the road leading to Fayetteville and Little Coharie by estimation one hundred and fifty acres it being in part of my rights of Dower lying within the lines of Reuban Fisher my son which tract or parcel of land I warrant and defend to the said Neill Colbreath his heirs and assigns forever. FISHER DEED to NEIL CULBREATH
This Indenture made the 10th day of June in the year of our lord 1805 between Rubin Fisher of the County of Bladen of the one part and Neil Cubreath of the County of Sampson of the other part both in the State of North Carolina, witnesseth that the said Rubin Fisher for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred dollars to one in hand paid by Neil Culbreath, The tract whereof I do hereby acknowledge and myself therewith fully satisfied contented and paid and by these present, do give grant bargain sell convey and confirm unto the said Neil Culbreath, one certain mapage or tract of land in the County of Sampson and State aforesaid on the west side of Little Coharie near the head of Fishers Mill branch, Beginning at a red oak and post oak thence N 50 E __ the branch E twice to a stake thence N 40 W 150 pole to a stake thence S _ 50 N 80 poles to a black jack thence to the beginning containing 50 acres, also another tract of land in the county aforesaid on the westside of said Little Coharie beginning at a red oak by the side of Cohara swamp near William Dees corner, and runs thence along his line S.43 W 160 poles to a red oak by a branch, thence N 47 W. 100 poles to a pine thence N. 43 E 160 poles to a white oak thence down Coharie to the beginning for 100 acres – It being a patent granted to Wm. Amos I. is Gray's son. B.C. (Benjamin Christopher Columbus), J.B. (Jolly Bunn) and W.H. (William H.) are Gray's son Micajah's sons. I have been told the three boys were living with their grandfather while their father, Micajah, served in the war. I am still looking for information on Micajah serving in the war and will post it when I find more information.

H. is probably Micajah's son, William H., who was born in about 1842. Aneliza Worsley [Redding Worsley's wife], age 35 labeled "insane" lives in household of wealthy ($30,000) farmer, Gray Armstrong [her father].

1867 - Included in will of Gray Armstrong, "I have this day entered into a contract with Carter Pope to provide for my daughter Ann Eliza Worsley during her lifetime, and I am to pay $175 per annum and he is to receive her share of my estate upon my death." Streety family book being published - any interest?

In my recent research I got online to find others who may be looking for the same family roots as me. In my browsing I came into contact with three cousins who descend from the same family I do. We branch off way back and are distant cousins. It's been exciting to get to know these cousins and share information with each other.

One cousin is writing a book on the Streety family. She is planning on publishing it this summer, which will be about July 2009. I don't know the cost of it yet, but will post again when I have more information.

I contributed all of the information I have descending from Margaret Streety, who married Reuben Fisher in about 1800. I come from their son, Daniel Fisher. If you click on the name tags on the right hand side of the blog you can find more information about any family member I've posted about. My cousins already had information on Margaret and Reuben and I helped with Daniel and his descendants.

Southy Fisher - my connection

As I have worked on connecting the Fisher and Streety families I have uncovered a wealth of information. Apparently I needed to get back 7 generations in order to find distant relatives searching for the same people. It has been exciting for me and even a bit overwhelming as I try to go through all this new information and get it straight.

After finding information on the Streety family submitted by Cindy Watts on http://www.ancestry.com/, I did several searches on that information and came into contact with 3 cousins. All three are related to Southy Fisher and descend through different lines. I have been so excited as I get e-mails from them and continue working on this family.

Here is the connection I have to Southy Fisher, who was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War:

Linking Fisher and Streety families

Click on image to enlargeI recently went to the Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.

My project is to find a link for the Daniel Fisher and Streety families in Bladen County, North Carolina. I have found information online linking these two families, but no hard evidence.

I found that there were three separate courthouse fires in Bladen County, which destroyed most of the documents there for 1700 and 1800. Since I haven't had much luck locating records for Daniel Fisher or his wife, Jane Jones, I decided to look into the Streety family as well as other Fisher relations. I believe Daniel had a brother named Reuben Fisher, who was a Baptist minister. Reuben performed marriages for several of Daniel's children. I have found census records for both Daniel and Reuben, but nothing linking them as brothers.

At the library I found a book entitled 'Bladen County Heritage, North Carolina, Volume 1', call number 975.632 H2b. I copied a page out of that book and post it here. The information was submitted for publication by Mary Tatum McLaughlin, 3514 Sheridan Drive, Durham, NC 27707. This document follows Elijah Fisher, who is another brother of Daniel and Reuben.

I hope someone reading this information will be able to provide further details and documentation.
